HPWF Processing

I have read in and written a Microsoft Word template
and am now trying to subsititute the text for merge fields.
 
I am getting the CharacterRun and calling delete to remove its contents
and then insert my own values.  The Delete method seems to corrupt the
document.
Has anyone seen this behaviour??
