That depends on what you mean by support?
As I understand it, HSSF writes files in an earlier format - biff8 I think -
to ensure that they are compatible with as many versions of Excel as possible.
Therefore, it should support - i.e. read and process files - everything in
Excel 2003 except for a few features.

to pure Java. It supports
