The answer to this is always "whatever version passes your unit tests
verifying the functionality you're using is stable enough for production"

As I already pointed out, you have to use the current snapshot of the
POI subversion repository. That means that you have to build the
libraries (JAR files) yourself. In order to do so, execute "ant dist".
