If you do, what happens if you save the downloaded file on local disk and open it? Also if you are seeing save/open dialog, what happens of you choose open? Does excel launch in this case or you see garbage within explorer? If excel do not launch, browser is not getting proper headers in http response. It can be due to mal-functioning proxy among other things. Try different browsers to see if anyone get its right.
