I found the same problem.
You can add this macro to your xls template:
Sub Auto_open()
Application.Calculation = xlCalculationManual
For Each osht In Worksheets
osht.EnableCalculation = False
osht.EnableCalculation = True
Next osht
Application.Calculate
End Sub

I used POI to create daily Excel file using a template
with formular. First of all, user will be prompted to
save the file whey he/she exit Excel, eventhough
he/she had never change any content. This is due to
the formula recal upon Excel startup.
Second problem is when a user is currently browsing an
XLS file with the "recal" turned off, simply click
open the POI generared XLS file (with formula), the
formula wil not be doing any recal and therefore it
display wrong info.
Is tere a way via POI that I can trigger a "recal"
before saving?
