Invalid header signature

I'm using poi-scratchpad-3.0-alpha2-20060811.jar and
poi-3.0-alpha2-20060811.jar to read word documents (Word97, 2000, XP,
2003).

For some documents I retrieve this error: java.IO.Exeption; Invalid
header signature ; read ...

What's happend?
