Hi Prashant,

since I needed only lists that can be handled with Excel or a text
editor I switched to write the records as plain ASCII with tabs as
a column separator and named the files *.xls. When I open such
a file in my enviroment, Excel will read and display them without
complaining. But, of cause all possibilities of formatting in the
Excel file are lost. Code for this is fairly generic since you only
have to append your data to a StringBuffer (data + "\t" + data and
so on).

May be a solution with Excel format is the new Excel API in the
3.* version which seems to have a very smaller footprint in re-
source consumption. I played around with that version but couldn't
use it in production sinced it is still only a release version.

Last not leased you may break up the huge data blocks in smaller
once by blocking them into chunks with convenient sizes. I can't
take this approach 'cause I program in a multi tier env. with stateless
http so adding a state (block handling) is cumbersome and expensive.
And you have to juggle with more than one file.

hth, cu Stefan

P.S.: Mailing this to the list may enhance the chance of getting
a better answer ;=).
