One of the problems of using ServletOutputStream to stream back the contents of the file is if the user cancels the operation, you shall see lot of exceptions in your log files. I had this problem a while back. I then changed the code to create files on the server and send back a reference to it to the user in response html.
What I used to do was I had a magic OutputStream class which wrote the response to the user if the real OutputStream was open, and wrote the response to nowhere if it was closed. :-)
