Interesting. I am trying to process a 34 MB file and I am getting a
heap error as well. It dies when I do:
HSSFWorkbook wb = new HSSFWorkbook(is); (is == InputStream)
I am using POI 3.0 alpha 3
Any ideas?

25K rows is not huge. I have been using HSSF for larger data without any
issues. What's the JVM heap size that you have currently?
