That is the basic concept, the main different is that SPF configured by
the sender and has more flexibility.

A lot of small business run their own mail server or host it
somewhere, they generally use their ISP mail  server to relay their
mail.
Your method will block these kind of emails. With SPF, the sys admin
of that small business can modify their SPF information so that it
include the ISP mail server as a legitimate sender.
