Mainly it is get the load off the system before using a heavier filtering/scanning systems such as amavis and SA... A perfect example of how this would be a benefit would be systems like Constantcontact and ExactTarget. We see a boat load of connections and emails from them as they send to 1 recipient per connection and then do hundreds of connection per mailing.
