It's what we ended up with because of maintaining several servers with 
different OS and the OS's have different revs of Postfix as their 
packaged release of postfix.

Mainly it is get the load off the system before using a heavier 
filtering/scanning systems such as amavis and SA... 

A perfect example of how this would be a benefit would be systems like 
Constantcontact and ExactTarget.  We see a boat load of connections and 
emails from them as they send to 1 recipient per connection and then do 
hundreds of connection per mailing.  Some domains want it, most don't.
