The database would grow to be enormous, if older enties were not deleted periodically. If you only care about what happened over the last hour, keeping data much longer than that is senseless, or if you need to track data up to a week, keeping a month's worth of data is useless. DBs with fewer entries parse more quickly and work more efficiently. Think of "cleanup" as working similar to cleaning out the garage, except for a DB. :-)
