"I will never, never, never abandon Israel."
Anyone with the slightest understanding of basic human psychology should be
able quickly to decipher the above sentence from Duncan Hunter: "I WILL abandon
Israel." Any nation in the world which is caught up in a neurotic and
dysfunctional social dynamic which requires grandiloquent, elaborate,
hyperbolic and often groveling expressions of loyalty from outsiders is on the
shakiest of grounds with those outsiders. Are American politicians required on
a regular basis to declare their passionate and undying loyalty to Canada,
Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, India or Saudi Arabia? Obviously
not -- we respect them too much to over-flatter them and insult their
intelligence. Those nations would regard it as absurd and unseemly to demand
such effusive expostulations of adoration -- they would dismiss it as bullshit.
Spare us. Most nations understand that the binding force among them is a
subtle collection of ever-shifting calculations of self-interest. Any
nation which demands almost religious subservience from the others is
displaying a distinct lack of self-confidence about its innate pragmatic and
strategic value. This is why Israel is leaning increasingly on religious
fundamentalist crackpots like John Hagee for American support -- it is losing
the battle for pragmatic minds in the foreign policy establishment.
Most politicians who have been forced to jump through the degrading rhetorical
hoops that Israel has held before them will eventually resent it and react in
precisely the opposite direction.
By the way, Hunter here utters forthrightly words that have been systematically
censored in the neocon-controlled mainstream media: the United States is in
Iraq for the sake of Israel:
[begin quote]
Hunter, an announced presidential candidate, immediately followed an
impassioned plea from Rev. Jan Willem Van Der Hoven, who in his "Greetings from
Israel" address declared that an American pull-out in Iraq would be tantamount
to an abandonment of Israel, a nation surrounded by enemies in the Middle East.
"Let's not trade oil for Jews!" he exclaimed.
[end quote]
Wow -- it's not even about Israel; Iraq is about "Jews," according to Duncan
Hunter, supposedly a very good friend of said Jews.
Hunter made his remarks at a gathering which was controlled by Christian
Armageddonist John Hagee.
