Yes, there's no doubt they're running interference for the neocon agenda. However, in the case of McCain, currently there's the added factor of his literally being Team Republican. The lone GOP gunslinger, versus two Team Democrat adversaries - squabbling with each other over who gets to wear the gun-belt. And of course the media circus will aid and abet that squabble to the fullest extent.
