This is a wrong headed conception, it decreases living standards. The reason Governments are slashing wages and conditions is to be competitive with overseas labor, it becomes a race to the bottom for the wage earner while the capitalist extorts more and more from the worker. This is the cause of profound social inequality--not getting a fair day's pay for a fair days work. Workers are being held to ransom, this is hardly democratic, infact democracy cannot exist where there is immense social inequality. America was at her most potent when the welfare state was at its most benevolent. Happy workers are hard working workers, that was the essence of the New Deal.
