A renowned criminal lawyer died after a gunman entered his upscale Florida
home and shot him in the head, police said.

Dan Markel, 41, a Florida State University professor, was found bleeding
from the bullet wound inside his Tallahassee house after a neighbor called
police and reported hearing a loud bang onFriday morning, WCTV-TV reported.

Markel — a father of two boys, ages 3 and 5 — was rushed to a local
hospital, where he died the next day.

Investigators searched Markel’s two-story Betton Hills home for clues, but
they didn’t reveal a possible motive for the senseless killing.

“The investigation has provided no indication that this case is connected
to burglary or robbery,” read a statement from the Tallahassee Police
Department. “There is no evidence this is a random act.”

Police, who say they believe Markel was targeted, had not identified a
suspect by late Tuesday.

"It's been a hard week for all of us," a close friend, Robin Effron, told
the Daily News.

Effron, a professor of law at Brooklyn Law School, said she and her
boyfriend just met Markel and his girlfriend for dinner when he visited the
city in early July.

"We got to meet each other's partners," said Effron, adding that Markel was
in good spirits during the meal.

"It was lovely...It was a very relaxed, happy dinner."

Markel, a Toronto native who graduated from Harvard Law School in 2001, was
recently divorced from Wendi Adelson, the mother of his two children and a
fellow FSU law professor.

Adelson, 35, has been cooperating with investigators, but her ex-husband’s
murder has left her feeling “distraught, devastated, scared to death,” her
lawyer, Jimmy Judkins, told USA Today.

Markel taught several classes at FSU and published several articles that
appeared in USA Today and The New York Times — and co-authored the book,
“Privilege or Punish: Criminal Justice and the Challenge of Family Ties.”

He also founded PrawfsBlawg <http://prawfsblawg.blogs.com/>, a blog devoted
to discussing a variety of law-related topics.

Several of his former colleagues commented on a post announcing Markel’s
shocking death.

“What we have in common, with many others, is Dan,” the post read.

Markel died early Saturday, a day after he was found inside his Tallahassee
home bleeding from a bullet wound to his head.

“His network of friends and loved ones — and he had a great deal of love
for all his many friends, as we did and do for him — is enormous. His
boundless energy was at the center of this community; it made it run, it
gave it life.”

Florida State University issued a statement that said, “We will feel his
loss for many years to come.”

Even students who didn’t know the professor said they were devastated by
his murder.

“Although he wasn’t my criminal law professor, Professor Markel was a
well-known scholar in the area and was known among students as being very
challenging in the classroom, and to think about big-ticket issues,” a
recent FSU graduate, Stefani Alexander, told Fox News.

Effron said she always admired how much Markel enjoyed teaching law.

"He told me, 'Robin, being a law professor is a loophole in life...this is
the best job you could ever have and don't forget that,'" she recalled.

"That really stuck with me. He felt such joy in his profession."

Police are offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to an arrest
and urge tipsters to call detectives at (850) 891-4462.
