NHS has gone to the dogs By RORY REYNOLDS The Sun (UK) 8/15/2009 AN NHS nurse quit her stressful £15,000-a-year job - to earn the same salary by walking dogs. And Julie Odell chooses to work just ten hours a week compared to 40 in the hospital - so could rake in FOUR TIMES as much. She gets around £30 an hour - compared to £7.50 at the NHS, which she left after "watching standards of care plummet". Julie of Edinburgh, said: "I'm just part-time but I've heard of one man who charges £10 per dog per hour, takes six dogs on every walk and does three walks every weekday. "That's £180 per day, and £900 a week - incredible. "But it's not just about the money. Working for myself is just fantastic." Julie, 43, revealed she had felt "trapped in this horrible system" while working for the NHS. She said: "I watched as the standards of care plummeted - but my voice went completely unheard whenever I said 'this isn't the best way we can be doing this'. "I left and while I was between jobs I met a woman out walking with a dog - and I fell in love with the idea." Julie added: "Now I get paid to walk around Edinburgh. "I started out just doing this with one dog but now I have nine or ten. "It's a proper business now - it's no fly-by-night thing. There's a lot of money to be made." Julie charges £8 per dog - which includes pick-up, a walk, cleaning if needed, and dropping back home. And she can take six dogs at a time under her insurance, so could make £48 an hour. Dogwalkers don't need a licence and some people don't bother with insurance so can take as many mutts as they can handle. And some of Julie's own pals earn £43,000 a year in the job. The industry is increasingly competitive, with 18 dog-walking firms in Edinburgh alone. Julie also does cat and dog sitting while their owners are on holiday. And she insisted she'll never go back to nursing. Julie said: "I am in heaven.
