Well, Derek thought, at least she was being pleasant towards someone. Though
he found himself feeling slightly annoyed, perhaps she wasn't speaking to
him. He wondered how much longer this was going to go on before life got
back to normal or eve something halfway resembling normal. He turned back
to Miranda and Lani. "Shall we call her mother," he asked the girl. He
was tempted to ask Lani to take Kat back upstairs, but he didn't want her to
leave at this point.

"Kat please go back upstairs," he instructed.

"No," Kat told him coming down the rest of the way and standing beside
Miranda. "I don't want her to go, she 's my friend. Why are you being so
mean to her?"

"I'm not being mean," Derek told her. And he wasn't, he hadn't raised his
voice or said anything objectionable, at least not to the ear of another
adult. "But she got here, though out security and there is no sign that she
had any adult supervision. To the best of my knowledge she was not expected
here. I'm sorry Kat, you'll have to play with your friend some other time
when your mother is here to approve it."

"But.....my mom said it was okay," Kat interjected. "She said Miranda could
come over." Her mind was spinning very quickly and at the moment she wasn't
thinking of what she was going to do when her mother found out about this
little lie. Rachel didn't even know Miranda and it was very likely that she
would never approve a play date with any kid she did know without meeting
the other kid and her parents first. Kat had lived with the woman long
enough to know that. "Really, Derek she did. It's okay."

Derek stared down at the little girl. He really wanted to talk with Rachel
about this. Especially considering the term they were on today, though he
hoped that would have gotten better by now. He was in a much better mood.
"Then, I need to hear that from you mother."
