Miranda felt the prying of Derek and Julia she put up a protective web around herself and Kat so they couldn't detect where she was.  She also through a spell into the room where the *fake* Kat and Miranda were.  The spell released some of Kat's essence that Miranda had gathered and put it into the fake Kat.  No one would be able to tell the difference, at least for now.   "Kat?"
