Julia looked at Kat's door before raising her hand to it and making a small
circular motion, giving her a clear view through the door to Patrick and Kat
as she answered simply "I'm keeping a promise."
Then she looked at Derek with a sad turn of her lips that was supposed to be
a smile and shrugged "Kat misses her dad. I brought him to her for a visit
and we were talking. She can.. she can call me with the cross I gave her.
The one my father gave me."
She knew Derek would know what cross it was she was talking about and she
looked at the Precept with knowing blue eyes. Eyes that were still open but
held a hint of the other emotions she was trying hard to hide from anyone
that would look too closely.
"I don't know what all is going on with her," she added with a sigh "But
she's trying things she's not ready for.. and I don't know how but I get the
impression she's not alone on it."
She was hesitant about telling Derek how she had found Kat but knew that he
would understand better than most and just might have a solution that
wouldn't alienate Kat from them "She projected herself to the other side
Derek. If it hadn't had been for the cross Patrick or I wouldn't have found
her. I.. I had to have Patrick help me when I couldn't pin point her
location at first."
She chewed her bottom lip before getting into the rest "And as for the other
stuff...... what is there to say?"
She looked at him with an expression torn - something someone would never
expect of a guardian angel or whatever it was she was "I don't belong
here... and I shouldn't have believed."
Derek
Derek reached out and touched her face gently. Doing so gave him a rather
odd tingling sensation in his hand. He had been so relieved when she came
back, though that hadn't erased the guilt he felt then and still felt. Had
she not died, things might have been different, but there was no way of
telling. "Julia, I am sorry," he said to her softly. "If I'd even had an
inkling of what was going tohappen I never would have let you go alone." He
knew this might be his only chance to apologize to her for his own short
comings and even though it wasn't something he normally might do, he felt he
had to now.
The other things she said about Kat were running though his mind and caused
him a lot of concern. "Did you see another child with her at all? She had
a playmate over, as far as I know the girl hasn't left yet." but she was
just a child how could two children get into something so advanced?
