Julia drove to the dock and waited for the ferry, looking at Kat in the
rearview mirror before asking "What's up? You seem deep in thought."

She had a feeling that maybe she hadn't covered up as well as she thought,
or maybe Kat was just realizing that it had been a while since she'd seen
her mom or dad. Julia hoped, for once, that it was the former and not the
latter. She wasn't too sure she could explain to Kat about Rachel.

The ferry honked as it approached and once docked with the pier she pulled
up on to it, parking Derek's UV and shutting off the engine and looking back
at Kat with a curious expression.

Kat:
The little girl didn't know if she should tell her or not. Sometimes
grownups got up set if you asked things that were none of your business.
However, Julia was so nice and seemed to want to know. "Was Derek mean to
you," she asked earnestly. Sometimes he got grumpy if people interrupted.
