Barbara found him just as he was hanging up and she stopped beside him, tone casual "You realize that you may very well be putting yourself in a corner you will not be able to get out of?  And after it had taken so long to finally get back on some kind of speaking terms with Derek too."

Sloan looked at her and sighed "I don't have a choice, Barbara.  I can't brush this under the carpet and wouldn't even if I could.  She's a security risk until we know for sure and she's already got full run of the House.  I'm not saying she is or isn't, but I have to take into consideration all possibilities and damnit she would be the one person that could be brought back and into this House with little to no resistance.  She's already done it and we don't even know for sure."

He ran his fingers through his hair and looked up at the sky "Derek could very well lose his position here for letting security go like this.  And Cross will dig until he has all of the answers and some we haven't even thought of."

"Derek would never jeopardize his House." Barbara stated firmly "And she's no agent of the Dark side I can tell you that right now.  I believe it's really her, and that something happened to let her come back."

Sloan looked at her "I'm not saying she is.... but I'm not saying she isn't, either.  It doesn't matter what I think.  If there is one stone left unturned it will come back to haunt us... bad.  If she has any chance of staying here or being a part again, there has to be no doubt whatsoever."

Barbara straightened her shoulders "Don't think it's going to be easy.  We Raynes are protective of our own."

She started to walk away, calling over her shoulder "And make no mistake about it, William.  She is one of us."

Sloan was left alone again, actually hoping that Julia did have the support Barbara was projecting.

She was going to need it.
