Derek looked at his young friend a bit startled by his tone.  "The decision
about taking the job was left up to Julia," Derek said in a calm voice.  "I
was not trying to "get rid of her."  You shouldn't make judgements about
conversations you did not witness."  It was true that Julia had made the
decision and he had given her every opportunity to change her mind, but he
couldn't help but wonder if part of her decision had been based on the fact
he had told her he wanted to spend some time with Amelia.  She had even said
it herself, when he told her she could change her mind.  Derek pondered this
for a moment and then pushed the thought aside.  He knew Julia, if she
really did not want to go she would have said no in the first place and
still found some way for him to spend time with Amelia.  That was just the
way she was.
