I had the same issue beginning this week, fiexed with some IFs:

<polymer-custom-parent>
<template if="{{ items }}">
  <template repeat="{{item in items}}">
  <polymer-custom-item item="{{item}}">
      {{item.title}}
  </polymer-custom-item>
  </template>
</template>
</polymer-custom-parent>
