Hi Dirk, `applyAuthorStyles` was recently removed from the Shadow DOM spec and Canary (with the WP flag) has been updated to reflect that. The docs<http://www.polymer-project.org/docs/polymer/styling.html>haven't been updated since taht happened, so apologies for the confusion.
The recommendation is to load your shared styles in the element definition using a stylesheet or use ^ and ^^<http://www.polymer-project.org/articles/styling-elements.html#style-fromoutside> * to style nodes from the outside. There's more in depth discussion in a previous thread: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/polymer-dev/gNlsZDltpUY/hS3d7sRqK3kJ *Note: based on feedback from the css-wg, ^ and ^^ are likely to to change names very soon. We'll keep this list posted when that happens.
