onclick seems to work ok for me:

<paper-menu-button icon="menu">
      <paper-item onclick="sayHello();">Menu Item 1</paper-item>
      <paper-item>Menu Item 2</paper-item>
      <paper-item>Menu Item 3</paper-item>
    </paper-menu-button>

<script>
function sayHello() { alert('hello!'); }
</script>

is your simulator running ios 7 or is it on an ios 8 preview?
