Seems as though specifying a straightforward 'on-change' javascript event 
handler for the textarea itself does the trick.  Its a shame that it isn't 
consistent with a normal input, in that 'committedValue' isn't an available 
attribute for both types, so that changes could be more easily observed 
using the same handler.

Anyhow...issue resolved...
