I couldn't actually do a complete stand-alone test with r1862 because it
wouldn't build on my machine - see output below.  (My guess is that
r1859 is causing the problem.  Maybe the shift left is overflowing on
x86_64 giving zero?)

I had another look at that and I hope it's now fixed.
