I think that America will stop being lazy when parents, who perpetuate the
cycle, learn to treat their children in a way that encourages active
self-motivation.

Perhaps there is some truth to "spare the rod"... and all the "child rights"
movements have limited parenting in such a way that the child now thinks
they have a right to disrespect and disobey. I'm not saying that we should
all go out and beat our children, or even that spanking / physical reprimand
is the appropriate coursre of action. But when a mother who is trying to "do
her best" gets hauled off to jail for child abuse because she spanks her 7
year old child in the parking lot of walmart after discovering the child
picked up a candy bar at the checkout stand... the children begin to learn
that they can use the system to "protect" themselves. "Mommy can't spank me
when I steal candy bars" turns into "McDonalds needs to pay me a million
dollars becuase I spilt hot coffee in my lap". "McDonalds needs to pay me a
million" turns into "The government needs to take care of my needs becuase I
don't want to" (welfare comes to mind, and perhaps global healthcare shortly
after that?).

When we can teach our children that there are unpleasant consequences for
their actions, it leads to a more respoinsible child... which leads to a
more responsible, and potentially less lazy adult.
