I suspect you were trying to go too far back in software history while
using current hardware/bios etc.

Because of my problems with the linux 5.8 kernel on the latest fedora, I am
now considering abandoning fedora and switching to CentOS, which seems to
be both highly stable and highly recommended.

I know the latest 64bit poplog (V16) works on it as well as the older 32bit
poplog, as CentOS is running on my old desktop PC in the CS department,
with kernel 3.10.0-1062.1.2.el7.x86_64

I hope that if CentOS ever runs a 5.8 or later kernel the mistake in design
will have been corrected in some way so as to allow incremental compilation
to work as in Poplog.

However, I so far have no personal experience installing CentOS: it was
done for me by computer officers in the department, several years ago.
