I thought I should report on what had happened since recent linux problems had
stopped my home PC working as it used to.

In response to my report about failing to get zoom working on recent versions of
fedora followed by audio failing to work in the most recent versions because of
decisions to switch from pulse audio to pipewire, which I could not get to work,
despite attempting to follow various sets of instructions Steve Isard (now at
Upenn, USA) suggested (off this list) that I try using Ubuntu-lts.

Since then we've been communicating off-list.

Since nothing else had worked, I've been following his instructions and now have
Ubuntu running on my PC with audio output working fine (e.g. BBC News in
firefox).

But I dislike the default Ubuntu window manager and hope that I'll soon be able
to replace it with Ctwm, my favourite WM (supporting multiple virtual desktops,
in my case 12 = 4x3 desktops).

My impression is that Fedora developers have lost their way since multiple
users are complaining about difficulties with audio, and goetting multiple,
conflicting, answers about remedies.

So far I've been very impressed with Ubuntu -- everything just seems to work,
but I don't like the way it works, i.e. the default user interface.

A window manager replacement (i.e. ctwm) should fix that. I can then reinstall
poplog and various other things, including restoring my home-networking
connections in Ubuntu.

I am not sure yet exactly how to do the Poplog switch, but that should be easy
after other things are working -- and then I'll be able to use ved on my home PC
again again, instead of the 'nano' editor!
