Yes, provided you configure your e-mail client to tell the server to do 
just that upon completion of the downloading of your mail.  With POP3, 
the majority of us do in fact configure our clients to instruct the 
server to delete our messages as soon as we have competed the 
downloading of the messages.

No, IMAP and HTTP email are designed to stay on the server.  The 
advantage being is that you can work with your mail from more than one 
computer.  You have to manually delete (purge) your messages off the 
server when using IMAP.
