Subject: [pop3] Administrative: Volunteer Testers Requested
Hello Everyone. :-)
A little history lesson here. The POP3 mailing list was born as a
ONEList.com mailing list. I subsequently have moved it three times
to majordomo hosting services.
As most of you know, my current host where my ashlists.org domain
resides does not give us the ability to create a sister majordomo
digest list for our pop3 list. For our POP3 list, that is not really
a problem. We have neither the subscribers or the output of messages
to really require a digest for our list. It is really my SeeknFind
list where a digest list would be most welcomed.
ONEList.com merged with eGroups.com who was recently bought out by
Yahoo.com to form YahooGroups. My original POP3 list has always
remained at that service through all the changes.
A while ago I learned of something -- you could create a list or
change an existing list at YahooGroups to a "Remote" mailing list. A
Remote mailing list at YahooGroups is a mailing list that is actually
hosted elsewhere, but by setting up YahooGroups facilities, you can
enjoy such features as archives, digests, file sharing, chat, etc.
You just cannot post to the YahooGroups directly, but instead you
subscribe to the actual list and post to it.
How this works for those wishing to receive a digest only, I think,
is that you subscribe to both the Remote POP3 list at yahoogroups.com
AND the pop3-digest list I just recently created at ASHLists.org.
You unsub yourself from the pop3 (primary) list here at ashlists.org.
Being subscribed to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] will allow you to
post to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Being subscribed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will allow you to collect
the digest as it is distributed.
You see I have a special yahoogroups address subscribed to the pop3
list @ ashlists.org. It collects the postings from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and then forms them into daily digests or more if we get hot and
heavy some days. Then all digest subscribers will receive their pop3
digests with the collated pop3 postings, but no longer get the
individual postings.
So then, I ask for a call of volunteers. I need some of you that are
prone to mostly read the POP3 postings and lurk the list, rather than
take active part in it, to switch to a digest version and help us
test this out for about a week or so. I am still working out some
bugs here.
If you would like to switch to a digest-only version of POP3 and be a
tester for me, please write me offlist and request this. I think it
best for me to manually handle the switch because it involves three
administrative transactions.
One caveat -- some people think that having your address listed with
YahooGroups increases the spam they receive. That may or may not be
true, but just be aware of that possibility. For most of us that use
free, remote pop3 services, we already put ourselves in the spam lane
anyway, so I should not think most of you would be worried about this.
Let me also invite the rest of you to volunteer to subscribe to the
YahooGroups POP3 Remote list. This will then allow you to partake in
reading the archives of the list; the file sharing; the posting of
links; the chat feature; etc.
For those wishing to be a part of the remote list at Yahoo but not
wishing to receive a digest, I would set your subscription option at
the YahooGroup site to nomail. You would continue to get the
individual messages from ASHLists.org for the POP3 list, but have the
use of the features of the Remote POP3 list at YahooGroups.
If I have confused everyone here, don't despair. I am not real sure
myself how all this is going to work. But nothing ventured, nothing
gained -- right? :-)
Let me know what you think and right me offlist if you want a part of
this testing phase.
