anyway, on another note, i've finally been introduced to Oscar Wilde. this
is my spring break, and instead of staying up late into the night doing
homework or procrastinating the doing of my homework, i've been reading him.
i started with "A Picture of Dorian Gray" and then read two of his other
stories: the ghost of canterville, and lord arthur somethingorothers crime.
i LOVE him. i wonder why on earth i didn't discover him earlier in my life.
i was just wondering if any of you have anything to say about him. what are
his other great works? etc. etc.
You'd do well to find "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" or "De Profundis" for
insight into his syphillitic decline after his arrest and detention. Also
worth a look "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young," "The
Critic as Artist" and "The Soul of Man Under Socialism". And of course the
rest of his plays and every single last one of his children's stories. I
wouldn't be surprised if you found a collection of all of his writings
second-hand. Gallery Press put one out in 1987, with dust jacket by Aubrey
Beardsley (whose prints are worth getting as well).
Find Richard Ellman's biography - very detailed (and contests, if I recall
correctly, the apocryphal final words of Wilde: "Either that wallpaper goes
or I do")
"Time is a waste of money" (How else do you explain fax machines, email,
ecommerce and cellular phones?)
