I think if you take out the mod-specific references,  Maria just described 
every scene out there....I have wide tastes in music and am on several 
mailing lists and keep track of different scenes on usenet,  etc.....and the 
same topics come up over and over again:  elitism in "the scene" (whethere 
it's goth, emo, indie, mod, punk, <insert scene here>).....and then 
discussions over whether a particular band/look/person is 
goth/emo/indie/mod/punk/whatever .......  scenes are boring!
