Oh, yes, I'd have to agree with you there. I found it particularly sad too,
because when you translate books into english they seem to be more vivid. I
think it's because you have to dwell on all the little parts that might
otherwise have been looked over. Similarly, Kafka's The Penal Colony (in
der Strafkolonie)was that much more disturbing when I had to look up words
for sections where he described the body not coming free of the device in
order to slide into the pit. ALSO, speaking of Joyce's a portrait...
