I saw Happiness last night on HBO, what a creepy movie that somehow managed
to not be as creepy as it should have been. I think I'm starting to like
Todd Solondz, though I didn't care much for Welcome to the DollHouse. In
other recent movie news, I saw Screwed and Battlefield Earth and both were
inexcusably bad. It obviously doesn't take much to get me into the
theater. I liked Where the Heart Is, but then I really had no chance of
disliking it with the presence of Natalie Portman. I really, really,
wanted to love Gladiator but something just wasn't right about it. Roger
Ebert more or less explained it, I think, but I also vehemently disagree
with the writers about Maximus' revenge. I don't want to ruin anything so
I won't go into details, except for the comment that you don't have him say
"Get me outside of the city walls and I'll show you what loyalty is." and
then not follow that path. Overall I haven't been too impressed with this
summer's offerings so far, even the kickoff comedy Road Trip wasn't that good.
