My biggest beef I have against Napster is how it has inspired the largest
amount of completely illogical and uninformed arguements on its side.
Piracy is going to always continue but what's worse is conning the public
into thinking the theft of intellectual property can be justified by the
supposed wrongs of others..
The whole "major labels screw artists over" argument is tired. I've never
heard of any artist being forced to sign a bad, one-sided contract. It's
difficult choice, yes, to choose between hundred thousand dollar
promotions and smaller budget labels with proven integrity, but the
artists make those decisions and choose to play the lottery for mainstream
success.
And although it's pleasing that the public may learn more about how much
music is out there, the opportunity to do that legally is already out
there - Most people are just too damn lazy to actively research music or
find a site with artist-approved samples. It's sad that something has to
be on a major label to get mainstream attention, but I blame the general
public as much as I do the major labels.

This is excellent. Toomey's also heavily involved with the Low Power FM
movement, which is where the real battles should be taking place. Napster
will be history soon and will have taught us the valuable lesson that when
you aren't pleased with what you can afford, just anonymously steal it
and point fingers at "the man".
