Ross’ PDFs now view w/o a crash in Gentoo’s poppler/xpdf.
The fancy links correctly fall back to jumping to the page with the
referenced figure. (Correctly for a non-ECMAscript viewer.)
Evince also worked, but I got a number of:
** (evince:28151): WARNING **: Unimplemented destination: POPPLER_DEST_FITBH,
please post a bug report in Evince bugzilla (http://bugzilla.gnome.org)
with a testcase.
I added a comment about that to:

pointing to those two PDFs.
