Seems like I resolved this issue by upgrading to the latest 2.8 Cmake
(beta).
Unfortunately the CMAKE_OSX_ARCHITECTURES variable is nowhere documented; I
just find references to it in mailing lists, which doesn't make it feel good
to use.
