Thanks! I didn't know about gcc 4.8 std::regex issue or about the devtoolset 
packaging. I built gcc 8.2 from source on my CentOS 4, 5, 6, and 7 build 
systems last July, but I have only been using it for the C compiler.

exactly on centos you can get up to gcc 8.2 
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/sclo/x86_64/rh/devtoolset-8/
