I would say it's almost a political choice on our part. >From a BSD point of view, a GPLv2+ is effectively a GPLv2 port. I would never dream to use it as the obnoxious GPLv3 licence. Heck, I wonder about the legality, but if I had local patches, I would definitely consider making them GPLv2-only.
