Builds and runs on sparc64, i386. Haven't tried other arch's for this

Starting with the current development series, there's a new policy on
updates to Asterisk: open tree for 3 months, smaller changes only in
months 4-6, then tree locked for a month pre-release. Sounds familiar,
eh? How well it works, remains to be seen...
Whether they get it right this time or not, I do think we should commit
this now,
well before the release. You've tested it on two plats, I've tested it
lightly on i386,
and it is way better than the 1.0.9 that is in the tree now.
