I did not know about the API compatability issue ... that would
explain a lot of problems that I'm having. :)

Given what you've said, how about this:

-- Is there an elegant way to get gnome-applets2/kdemultimedia/et. al. to build?
I have the "unknown architecture" problem with the gstreamer in the
tree. I'd like to try out GNOME as I do not like how slow KDE is.
Right now I'm using xfce4 as my desktop, and I may stick with this.
KDE makes my 2.8GHz Athlon 64 system seem like a P500 running Windows
XP.

-- I know about the sample rate output option in many applications
(mpg123, KDE arts, etc). Not all applications have this, and some
applications' resampling gives me aliasing artifacts in the output
(mpg123 in particular). It also seems more "elegant" to have all
applications' streams admixed in one place. I suppose there is no
real reason to waste my time with this, though.

-- I have not made ports, as I have not had the time to study the
ports subsystem in enough detail, but gstreamer-0.10.4 and the base
plugin tarball compile without the slightest modification--no
configure flags, even. I'm getting back into using OpenBSD after a
4-year break from basically everything related to
computers/networking, so I'm rusty, to say the least.
I also never got into programming much, and have to re-learn a lot of
shell scripting, etc (zsh looks great, I wish I knew about that years
ago). These things come intuitively to me (I used to be a
systems/network administrator in a former life, so I have "core
competence", but I'm by no means advanced relative to many/most in the
OpenBSD community).

Thanks for your/everyone's patience with me; if I wanted as much
software availability as possible I'd just give up and install windows
or linux, but the quality and coherence of OpenBSD is just too
seductive. I'd rather spend my time learning the most worthwhile OS.
