i'll try to take care of these.

started looking at fontforge... you need USE_LIBTOOL, and better
dependency checking. for example, depending on whether tiff is installed,
the configure script comes up with something different. so if something
is needed, make sure it is installed, or if something is not needed but
picked up by default if installed, use some configure flag to disable it.
