softdep is nice but running without it does not make a core 2 duo as slow 
as a PIII. 

A good sugestion would be to look in top and vmstat -i for huge time
used for interrupt or system. My guess is that the box needs a ACPI 
enabled kernel (config -ef bsd and type "enable acpi") to get the correct 
interrupt routing.
