I installed gcompris on current, did not have any problems at all, other than the difficulty of downloading sdl* sources from www.libsdl.org/projects/. Copying the sources from sourceforge and putting it in /usr/ports/distfiles solved the problem for me. I used the artsd flavor of sdl and there were no problems with sound -- in fact it sounded quite a bit better on OpenBSD. My daughter was using Ubuntu to play gcompris and to get sound working properly, she had to periodically enter a pkill esd and pkill jack and so on. Not anymore, now that gcompris works perfectly on OpenBSD!
