That bulletin board entry is already out of date. The instructions
given there will probably fail as they stand, the object tree is now
called /usr/xobj by default. So don't point people to external docs,
in particular when much better official docs are available, in this
case /usr/src/xenocara/README.

To the OP: Yes, it is possible. But why would you want to?
Using snapshots is *much* simpler, quicker, and less error-prone.

I have been running xenocara before the first snapshot was available,
in fact even before 4.1 was tagged, because i have been working on
some ports depending on X (e.g., psi and amaya). Compiling
xenocara itself was not difficult, but after that, manually
recompiling all the ports depending on it was a huge amount of
work. Even the developers have been hunting for weeks trying to
get all the dependencies right, and small bugs with regard to
dependency information still continue being found.

So, in particular if you need to ask, do use snapshots if you can.

Yours,
  Ingo
