I see similar for gMTP, but the various libmtp CLI tools (mtp-*) are flaky for me too. Some of them work (including mtp-filetree and mtp-detect) but many of them hang for some time with waitchan "usbsyn" and eventually fail. After that, I have to unplug/replug the device before any of the tools will work. It seems to me like the issue is not with gMTP itself, just that it's doing some operation which triggers one of these hangs.
