The only real trouble with using qemu is performance. Builds take ... forever. But I can attest to its value for port testing; one can discover compiler option problems, big/little endian issues, etc. The emulators/simh port can be used for testing the vax arch, too. Its performance is much worse than qemu -- until I tried it, I didn't think that was possible -- but this arch can help confirm/deny shared library requirements. If only qemu worked for macppc, sparc, sparc64... but it doesn't. :(
